Cast and Crew: Ursula Andress, Burgess Meredith
What It’s About: To save the Princess Andromeda (Judi Bowker) from being sacrificed to the Kraken, Perseus (Harry Hamlin), the bastard son of Zeus (Laurence Olivier), must find and kill Medusa. Medusa’s head, which can turn anything living into stone, is the only thing that can stop the Kraken. Will the gifts of the Gods and the winged horse Pegasus enable Perseus to survive the Kraken, Medusa, not to mention the wrath of the sea goddesses Thetis (Maggie Smith) and her cruel son Calibos (Neil McCarthy)?
Why Watch it Today?: Edith Hamilton, the classicist most famous for her widely used mythology primer, was born today in 1867. Hamilton would probably be appalled by the cobbled together version of the story of Perseus (with lifts from not only the tales of other heroes, but also from the mythology of other cultures!), but for many children of the 80s, Clash of the Titans was their first and most vivid introduction to classical mythology, aided by Ray Harryhausen’s stop motion special effects.
