January 16th, 2011: Little Caesar

Cast and Crew:    Mervyn LeRoy (Director); W.R. Burnett (Novel); Douglas Fairbanks Jr.

What It’s About: Rico (Edward G. Robinson) moves to the big city with big dreams and works his way up to the top of the mob, but can anyone stay on top for long?

Why Watch it Today?: Prohibition went into effect today in 1919, leading to a surge in organized crime-and organized violence over the trade in illegal liquor.  Little Caesar was one of the first, and still one of the best, gangster films, made Edward G. Robinson a star and practically created the gangster film, right down to the rise-and-fall storyline used by most mob movies to this day.
