Cast and Crew: Steven Soderberg (director), Jennifer Lopez, George Clooney, Ving Rhames, Luis Guzman, Don Cheadle.

What it’s About: When heistmaster Jack Foley (George Clooney) busts out of the joint and takes FBI agent Karen Sisco (Jennifer Lopez) hostage, good chemistry conspires to pull these two seasoned pros off their game, despite the fact they take their chosen careers damn seriously.

Why Watch it Today: Before Jennifer Lopez pushed her full-court press on top-40 listeners, she was a budding film star. The obvious problem was finding her a co-star who could help project her planetary-grade sex appeal onto a scale that Joe Sixpack could hope to possess–or at least approach–for a couple hours of celluloid runtime. As the film’s bar scene illustrates, George Clooney is tailor made for the job. Besides being endowed with an air of knowing self-assurance that must produce a gravity all its own, he also looks pretty good without his pants. This is more than just a star vehicle, however; Out of Sight is a Steven Soderberg project (Sex, Lies and Videotape, Ocean’s 11); and he seems eager to put his own spin on the box office success that Pulp Fiction and its ilk had recently enjoyed. Despite edgy editing, out-of-sequence storytelling, and requisite clever dialog, Out of Sight is a conventional, major-key Hollywood crowdpleaser, and a fine one at that. And what better day to enjoy it than the in-movie date Jack Foley robs the bank, as seen in this still below.
