March 21st, 2011: Hot Fuzz

Cast and Crew:  Martin Freeman, Bill Nighy, Paul Freeman, Jim Broadbent, Paddy Considine, Edward Woodward, David Bradley

What It’s About: When his less-impressive co-workers get maverick cop Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) transferred to the small village of Sandford, it takes him time to adjust, but eventually, with the aid of his incompetent partner Danny Butterman (Nick Frost), he discovers a conspiracy there that goes right to the top.

Why Watch It Today?:  Hot Fuzz was director and co-writer (along with star and co-writer Simon Pegg) Edgar Wright’s follow-up to his enormously successful spoof of zombie films, Shaun of the Dead.  Here the team ruthlessly (and lovingly) parody cop movie clichés to hilarious effect.  Timothy Dalton, who was born today in 1944, is brilliant as Sanford’s sinister grocer, Simon Skinner, and steals every scene he’s in.

Where to Get It:  iTunes, Netflix (rental only), public libraries, or Amazon
