April 25th 2011: Bachelor Mother (1939)

What It’s About: Merlin Department Store shop girl Polly Parrish (Ginger Rogers) is left with a foundling.  Try as she might, she is unable to give the child up for adoption, as everyone believes she’s the child’s mother.  When David Merlin (David Niven), the son of Merlin’s owner J.B. (Charles Coburn) gets involved, the comedic misunderstands really get going.

Why Watch it Today?: Star Ginger Rogers died today in 1995. Rogers is most known and celebrated for her roles dancing opposite Fred Astaire, but in Bachelor Mother she shows off her comedic side.  The romantic and comedic chemistry between Niven and Rogers is excellent, and the film gently dances around Code restrictions to deliver us a story with a single mother.
