May 6th, 2011: Little Shop of Horrors (1986)

Cast and Crew: Charles B. Griffith (1960 Screenplay); Howard Ashman (Musical and Screenplay); David Geffen (Producer); Steve Martin, Tischa Campbell-Martin, Levi Stubbs, John Candy, Bill Murray, Christopher Guest, James Belushi

What It’s About: Seymour Kelborn (Rick Moranis) works at Mushnick’s (Vincent Gardenia) flower shop along with Audrey (Ellen Greene), who Seymour has a crush on.  When he finds a strange new plant, he names it Audrey II and takes care of it…but soon Seymour discovers that Audrey II is ever-growing, ever hungry (for human blood, no less) and intelligent…

Why Watch it Today?:The stage version of Little Shop of Horrors premiered today in 1982.  At the time the idea of turning a film into a musical was reasonably novel, much less one based on an obscure, low-budget cult film, in this case a 1960 cheapie that Roger Corman kicked out in a matter of days during his brief black comedy period.   The film version, directed by Frank Oz, was a modest commercial success, with a happy ending replacing the original’s much darker one.
