May 23rd, 2011: The Graduate (1967)

Cast and Crew:  Mike Nichols (Director); Buck Henry (Co-Writer); Simon and Garfunkel (Songs by); Murray Hamilton, Norman Fell, Richard Dreyfuss

What It’s About: Ben Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) is a newly graduated “adult” who finds himself once again living at his parents house, wondering what he can and should do next (“Plastics” is the famous one word piece of advice he gets from one dull party guest), while navigating an affair with his neighbor Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) which becomes even more complicated when he gets set up on a date with her daughter, Elaine (Katharine Ross).

Why Watch It Today?: The Graduate is must-see viewing for recent graduates, and my own alma mater’s Commencement was yesterday; by fortuitous coincidence, I first saw The Graduate under these very same, ideal conditions.  Good luck, my fellow Judges, and same to all the other recently minted graduates out there!

Where to Get It:  iTunes, Netflix (rental only), public libraries, or Amazon
