June 19th, 2011: Chinatown (1974)

Cast and Crew:   Roman Polanski (Director); Jerry Goldsmith (Score); Robert Evans (Producer); Faye Dunaway, Perry Lopez, John Hillerman, Diane Ladd, Roy Jenson, Joe Mantell, Bruce Glover, James Hong, Rance Howard, Burt Young

What It’s About: Detective Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) takes a case from a woman who claims she is Evelyn Mulwray.  The problem is, she isn’t, and soon Jake is in far over his head in a case that is bigger than he imagined.

Why Watch it Today?: Today is Father’s Day, and since my Movie of the Day for Mother’s Day was Psycho, which features one of the all time worst mothers in film history, today’s film features John Huston as Noah Cross, one of the most monstrous fathers in film.  Chinatown is an amazing  Neo-Noir, beautifully shot and evoking the original Noir/detective films while taking advantage of the lack of censorship in 1970s Hollywood to create a film as dark as any of the crime novels that Film Noir took inspiration from.
