July 3rd, 2011: All About Eve (1950)

Cast and Crew: Joseph L. Mankiewicz (Writer/Director); Darryl F. Zanuck (Producer); Gary Merrill, Hugh Marlowe, Marilyn Monroe, Thelma Ritter

What It’s About: Aspiring actress Eve (Anne Baxter) insinuates herself into the circle of Margo (Bette Davis), the aging queen of Broadway and to paraphrase Margo herself, you better fasten your seatbelts, because it’s gonna be a bumpy night!

Why Watch it Today?: All About Eve is the Hollywood film about behind the scenes politics on Broadway, with the action narrated by the cynical and manipulative critic Addison DeWitt, expertly played by today’s birthday boy, George Sanders.  The urbane Sanders, with his haughty matter and icy wit, was perfect playing amusing heels like DeWitt, and the rest of the cast is equally good, with Davis giving the performance of her career.
