January 19th, 2012: Bloodlust! (1961)

What It’s About:  Best described as a lost live action episode of Scooby Doo where the gang (minus Scoob) stumbles into The Most Dangerous Game.  This time out a tweedy, fey Dr. Albert Balleau (Wilton Graff) develops a taste for killing men while serving as a sniper in the Second World War and now hunts convicts on his own private island. Can our group of luckless teens successfully match wits with the doctor and his sailor shirted, Batman refugee mooks?

Why Watch it Today?Collier’s Weekly published Richard Connell’s short story “The Most Dangerous Game” today in 1924*.  The story features a big game hunter marooned on an island where he becomes the prey of a White Russian expatriate who sees man as the “most dangerous game”.  Connell’s story is one of the most adapted, imitated and expanded upon in film history, inspiring everything from straight adaptations to sci-fi and horror stories.  Last year we featured one of the most successful films inspired by this work, Predator; this year we’re showcasing one of the silliest, which prominently features Robert Reed, the once and future Mr. Brady.
