October 17th, 2012: Gilda (1946)

What It’s About: Gambler Johnny Farrell (Glenn Ford) travels to Argentina and becomes casino owner Ballin Mundson’s (George Macready) right hand man.  Things are good-until Mundson returns from a trip to America with a new wife:  Gilda (Rita Hayworth), who Farrell knows and hates…but as Mundson himself says, hate is such an…exciting…emotion…

Why Watch it Today?: Gilda‘s reputation largely rests on its star, Rita Hayworth, who was born today in 1918, and is most famous for her performance of “Put the Blame on Mame” which is about as close to a strip tease/burlesque number as the production code would allow in 1946.
