November 28th, 2013: Pieces of April

Cast and Crew:   Peter Hedges (Writer, Director); Oliver Platt, Patricia Clarkson, Sean Hayes, SisQo

What It’s About: April Burns (Katie Holmes) and her boyfriend Bobby (Derek Luke) frantically try to prepare a Thanksgiving meal for her estranged family, while the Burns encounter many difficulties on their way to her apartment.

Why Watch it Today?: I was charmed by this Indy take on Thanksgiving when I saw it in a theater with my wife the Baroness ten years ago.  Maybe it was just the heady state the early stages of relationship put one in (if I recall correctly, much humor was derived from an awkward attempt to put my arm around her), or maybe it was the film itself, but I enjoyed it despite my better judgement.  Whether you do or do not, may your holiday, however you spend it (and whomever you spend it with) be a happy one.

Other Choices:  Two years ago I recommended my family (and many others who lived in NYC and southern Connecticut in the 1970s and 1980s) tradition of watching King Kong, Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young; last year I recommended the so-bad-it’s-good Thanksgiving slasher film Home Sweet Home.

Nice pick. I also liked this a LOT more than I thought I would, not being a big Katie Holmes fan and all. But everyone did a great job overall. Think I’ll do the Kong/Young thing this year, though. Can’t pass up those three (although SoK works more as a comedy for me)…
