April 19th, 2014: Bedazzled (1967)

Bedazzled

Cast and Crew: Stanley Donen (Director); Raquel Welch

What It’s About: Short order cook Stanley Moon (Dudley Moore) is infatuated with waitress Margaret (Eleanor Bron).  Moon decides to end it all when he meets George Spiggott (Peter Cook) who offers him seven wishes for his soul..but can you trust the devil?

Why Watch it Today?: Dudley Moore, born on this date in 1 935, tends to be remembered these days for the films he made in the wake of mega hits 10 and Arthur, but his first successes were as one half of a comedy duo with his co-star here, Peter Cook.  Bedazzled slowly builds to some very big laughs and is a bit more theologically minded than most “deal with the devil” comedies.

One of my all-time favorite smart comedies, but it’s still hard to believe Stanley Donen did Saturn 3 about 13 years later (yeesh)…
