Cast and Crew: The Del-Aires
What It’s About: When radioactive waste is dropped off the coast, it combines human skeletons and nearby sea-life into a hideous, bloodthirsty creatures. Slowly our heroes, local beach going teens Hank (John Scott) and Elaine (Alice Lyon), figure out what’s going on. Elaine’s father, Dr. Gavin (Allan Laurel) discovers the only thing that can stop the monsters-good ole’ sodium-but can they get to New York City and back with a supply fast enough to defeat the beasts?
Why Watch it Today?: Connecticut entered the Union on January 9, 1788. What better way to celebrate this milestone than with one of the most embarrassingly bad monster designs of all time, filmed in Stanford, Connecticut no less, by then-Connecticut based schlockmesiter Del Tenney? Your reviewer is himself a Nutmegger, and can recall hearing stories of the filming of this “epic” from supermarket co-workers who were members of the motorcycle gang Del Tenney recruited for extras back in the day. Sprinkle a little nutmeg in your hot buttered rum and sit down to enjoy this mix of beach and monster movie and think warm thoughts, because baby, it’s cold outside!
Where to Get It: Netflix (rental only) or Amazon
There are also multiple versions of the film available on YouTube, including the masterful MST3K episode that features it and even one hosted by Indianapolis horror-host Sammy Terry (get it?).
