March 26th, 2011: Letters from Iwo Jima

What It’s About: The battle for Iwo Jima, told through the stories of the Japanese commanding officer, General Kuribayashi (Ken Wantanabe), and Saigo(Kazunari Ninomiya), a reluctant Japanese private.

Why Watch it Today?: The last Japanese defenders of Iwo Jima were wiped out today in 1945.  Clint Eastwood directed this film as a companion piece to The Flags of Our Fathers, but Letters is easily the better of the films, a haunting look at the other side, their fate, and the horrors of war.
