April 28th, 2011: The Dunwich Horror (1970)

Cast and Crew:   Curtis Hanson (Screenplay); Roger Corman, Samuel Z. Arkoff, James H. Nicholson (Producers); Les Baxter (Music); Lloyd Bochner, Sam Jaffe, Talia Shire

What It’s About: When weirdo Wilbur Whateley (Dean Stockwell) steals the Necronomicon from Miskatonic University and kidnaps Nancy Wagner (Sandra Dee) it is up to Dr. Henry Armitage (Ed Begley) to stop Whateley.

Why Watch it Today?: Ed Begley, a respected character actor and father of Ed Begley, Jr., died today in 1970.  The Dunwich Horror was one of his last roles, an only sometimes effective attempt to meld a Gothic Horror film with a Rosemary’s Baby rip-off by grafting on some new characters to the plot of H.P. Lovecraft’s story.  Begley is a real trooper here, doing his best to make a climax that consists of him yelling weird phrases at Dean Stockwell work.
