Cast and Crew: Joseph Cotton, Angela Lansbury
What It’s About: Newly wed couple Paula Alquist (Ingrid Bergman) and Gregory Anton (Charles Boyer) move into the home where her aunt was murdered ten years earlier. There strange things happen, and Paula begins to think she is losing her mind, with the help of her domineering husband.
Why Watch it Today?: Director George Cukor was born today in 1899. Cukor was known for directing women in powerful performances, including in today’s film. Gaslight was one of the best from a cycle of 1940s films that combined suspense with a female protagonist (see Sorry, Wrong Number for another great example), with great performances by Boyer and Bergman and plenty of tense scenes.
