Cast and Crew: Terrence Fisher (Director)
What It’s About: When Sir Henry Baskerville (Christopher Lee) inherits his uncle’s estate, Doctor Mortimer (Francis De Wolff), Lord Baskerville’s physician, recruits Sherlock Holmes (Peter Cushing) to investigate the death of Sir Henry’s uncle and its connection to the legend of the family curse.
Why Watch it Today?: Actor William Gillette was born today in 1853. Gillette was the first actor to play Sherlock Holmes on stage, and is as responsible for the traditional stage and screen interpretation of the character as the character’s creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This 1959 adaptation of perhaps the most famous Holmes story comes to us from Hammer Studios, bringing their best actors (Lee, Cushing and André Morell as Dr. Watson) along with their usual Gothic horror style and atmosphere.
