December 19th, 2011: Scrooge (1951)

Cast and Crew:   Ernest Thesiger, Peter Bull, Patrick Macnee

What It’s About: The ghost of Jacob Marley (Michael Horden) appears before his old skinflint partner Ebenezer Scrooge (Alastair Sim) on Christmas Eve.  Marley warns Scrooge of the price of his cold heart and ill-treatment of his fellow-man, and informs Scrooge of the coming visits of the Spirits of Christmas Past (Michael Dolan), Present (Francis De Wolff) and Christmas Yet to Come (C. Konarski) before the morning dawns.  Will Scrooge heed their warnings?

Why Watch it Today?:  Charles Dickens beloved Christmas tale  A Christmas Carol was first published today in 1843.  The story has been adapted countless times.  Scrooge gives us a great, straightforward version which manages only a few changes (that somehow still feel faithful to Dickens), suitably spooky spirits, and a great performance by Sim as the title character.

Where to Get It: Netflix (rental only) and libraries

This movie is also available, in one peice, on youtube (till a copyrite lawyer removes it).

I just learned, from the Washington Times, Sim did the voice of Scooge for a 1971 cartoon! With animation by chuck jones!

It’s also on youtube, in 3 parts, and supposedly not available on dvd.
