December 21st, 2011: Black Christmas (1974)

Cast and Crew: Olivia Hussey, Keir Dullea, Margot Kidder, John Saxon, Andrea Martin, Art Hindle

What It’s About:  As campus empties out for Winter Break, someone is killing off the members of a sorority one by one while taunting the survivors with bizarre, obscene phone calls.  Will anyone figure out what the audience knows from the opening, that the killer is inside the house?

Why Watch it Today?:   Today is the first day of winter, the solstice, and the shortest, darkest day of the year in the Northern hemisphere, the perfect time to watch this dark gem of an early slasher film from Bob Clark, who went on to greater success directing Ted Turner’s favorite Christmas film.  Turn out the lights except maybe some candles or Christmas lights, and keep a good eye on the entrance to your attic…

Where to Get It:   Android Market, Netflix, YouTube.

this movie might have played on hbo, back when you could get it for free, though only in black and white, by setting the tv channel knob in between 2 channels.

and of course it was remade, just a few years ago.
