December 31st, 2011: 200 Cigarettes (1999)

Cast and Crew: Risa Bramon Garcia (Director); Bob & Mark Mothersbaugh (Music); Ben Affleck, Casey Affleck, Dave Chappelle, Elvis Costello, Guillermo Diaz, Angela Featherstone, Janeane Garofalo, Gaby Hoffman, Kate Hudson, Catherine Kellner, Courtney Love, Brian McCardie, Jay Mohr, Nicole Ari Parker, Martha Plimpton, Christina Ricci, and Paul Rudd

What It’s About: The antics of several groups of New Yorkers (and a couple kids from Ronkonkoma) on New Year’s Eve in 1981. The film attempted to capitalize on late-90’s nostalgia for 1980’s fashion and music, but ultimately didn’t fare well at the box office. Probably having something to do with releasing a movie about New Year’s Eve in February. This film might be a little on the silly side, but there are a lot of great scenes done by popular modern actors early on in their careers. All done without bashing you over the head with how great New York is supposed to be! Highly recommended treasure that seems to get harder to find every year.

Why Watch it Today?:  The film takes place entirely on New Year’s Eve, 30 years ago today!
