Cast and Crew: Guy Hamilton (Director); Richard Maibaum and Paul Dehn (Screenplay); Ian Fleming (Novel); Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman (Producers); John Barry (Score); Peter R. Hunt (Editor); Honor Blackman, Shirley Eaton, Harold “Odd Job” Sakata, Bernard Lee, Lois Maxwell, Burt Kwouk, Desmond Llewelyn
What It’s About: James Bond (Sean Connery), investigates Auric Goldfinger’s (Gert Frobe) gold smuggling operation and stumbles upon a plot that could destabilized the world’s economy.
Why Watch it Today?: Shirley Bassey, the singer most identified with the James Bond series, turns 75 today. Why not celebrate with the Bond film that features her most memorable and successful theme song?
Where to Get It: Watch it at Netflix, rent it at Amazon and iTunes or borrow it at your local library.
Other Choices: Tom meets Summer on January 8th in 500 Days of Summer.
Lesbian—with a capital L! Literally. Pussy Galore (not Shirley Bassey), is a Lesbian in the novel, with the word spelled with a capital L. Bond, being the hetrosexual hunk that he is, changes her.
That’s the real reason President Kennedy loved the Bond novels? 🙂
Boy George is a big Shirley Bassey fan; can only wonder the shock Ian Fleming and JFK would have had, seeing Boy.
Yes, the book makes James Bond’s “rape Pussy Galore” straight gambit explicit. Ugh. There are certain things you are forced to reconcile yourself to if you’re going to watch the Bond series, or else you can join the many people who hate them (especially this one) with good reason. For good or ill I grew up watching this and can return allow nostalgia to just let me roll with them.
Hitchcock, supposedly, liked the little old lady with the machine gun in GOLDFINGER.
Hitchcock’s own MARNIE had Tippie Hendren having sexual problems—-with Connery, again the solution. Hendren later popped up in THE HARRED EXPERIMENT, offering open marraige advice to Don Johnson, who was sleeping with her real, underage, daughter at the time.
Why watch “goldfinger”? Best bad theme song of all the Bond movies.
“He’s the man / the ,man with the Midas touch…such a cold finger…he picks you to enter his web of sin…”
“He loves only gold!”
So wildly over-produced and sung with such abandon.
I seem to remember singing along with this in a certain apartment numbered with the fraction 1/2…
Goldfinger is undoubtedly the best bombastic Bond theme, but I do enjoy Tom Jones nonsensical follow up for Thunderball:
“So he strikes….like THUUUUNNDDDERRR BAAAAAALLLLLLL”-what the hell does that even mean?
I’m told 1/2 numbered apartments are the best.
I think EVERYBODY loves that old with a gun.
