January 25th, 2013: Battleground (1949)

Cast and Crew:  William A. Wellman (Director); Van Johnson, Ricardo Montalban, James Whitmore, James Arness

What It’s About:  A squad of infantry from the 101st Airborne must survive being trapped in Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge.

Why Watch it Today?: The Battle of the Bulge ended today in 1944.  Previously we marked the beginning of the battle with the surreal, almost fairy tale Castle Keep.  Battleground tells the story very much in keeping with its era, with quirky character moments (based on screenwriter Robert Pirosh’s personal experiences in the battle) and a generally positive portrayal of the Army  and its citizen soldiers that played well with an audience that lived through the war.

Other Choices:  Today is Burns Day, so why not watch Rob Roy, a movie about one of Scotland’s great folk heroes?
