April 12th, 2013: Earth vs. the Spider (1958)

Earth vs. the Spider

Cast: Samuel Z. Arkoff, James H. Nicholson (Executive Producers)

What It’s About: A giant spider preys upon a rural community.

Why Watch it Today?:   Rock Around the Clock was recorded on this day in 1954 by Bill Hayley and the Comets.  While it was certainly not the first rock and roll song, nor even the first one to chart, the song popularized the musical style and made it a household word.  Just four years later, writer/director/producer Bert I. Gordon’s (nicknamed Mr. B.I.G. due to his fondness for films about giant stuff) giant spider film features a hilarious scene where rock and roll wakes up the spider after its knocked out by DDT and placed into storage at a high school gymnasium.  The spider that was found lurking in a nearby deep, dark  cave.  Woken up.  By rock.  In a high school gym.  Do I have to paint a picture as to why this “subtext” is so hilarious?
