Cast and Crew: Walt Disney (Producer); Sterling Holloway, Louis Prima, Clint Howard
What It’s About: Mowgli (Bruce Reitherman) is a man-cub raised by wolves, along with Baloo (Phil Harris) the bear and Bagheera (Sebastian Cabot) the panther. When Shere Khan (George Sanders), the tiger, sets his sights on Mowgli, can Baloo and Bagheera protect him?
Why Watch it Today?: Phil Harris, the band leader and radio star who gave his distinctive voice to Baloo, died on this date in 1995. While a terrible adaptation of the Rudyard Kipling book from which it derives its title, The Jungle Book is a fun late classic period Disney film and a great showcase for Harris.
When I was really young (before the birth or sister or brother) I wore this record out. We kept borrowing it from the library.
Yes. Record. Library. So 20th century.
Sometimes I worry that Mowgli’s example (leaving the jungle for an Indian girl) was formative for me.
Hah! Who knew it would wield such power?
I highly recommend the book, btw, it’s good short read and has almost nothing to do with the movie.
