October 7th, 2013: The Tomb of Ligeia (1964)

Tomb of Ligeia

Cast and Crew: Samuel Z. Arkoff (Producer)

What It’s About: Verden Fell (Vincent Price) is bereft after the death of his beloved wife Ligeia.  He meets Lady Rowena Trevanion (Elizabeth Shepard) and the pair fall in love.  Fell loses some of his odd manner while they are on their honeymoon, but when they return to the decaying Abbey where he makes his home (and where he lived with Ligeia) Fell begins to fall apart, dreading the return of LIgeia, who swore she would return from death…

Why Watch it Today?:  Edgar Allan Poe died today in 1849.  I’ve loved The Tomb of Ligeia ever since I saw the tail end of it late one Saturday morning as part of the old “Double Creature Monster Feature” as a wee one, another of Corman’s great cycle of films very loosely based on Poe’s stories and poems, always dripping in atmosphere, ending in fire, and with a few minor exceptions, featuring Vincent Price.

Other Choices:  The Masque of the Red Death, The Raven, Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Black Cat, The Fall of the House of Usher, Premature Burial, Castle of the Walking Dead or read the original short story, Ligeiaor have Vincent Price himself read it to you.
