What It’s About: The story of the Marines who were photographed raising a flag at Iwo Jima, how that photograph became one of the most indelible images of the Second World War, their fates after that event, and how each man handled their unwanted fame.
Why Watch it Today?: The famous photograph was taken today in 1945. Clint Eastwood’s companion piece, Letters from Iwo Jima, is the better film, but The Flags of Our Fathers gives the viewer a more comprehensive view of the events surrounding the battle as well as a look at three men who were selected to be the heroes of the day.
