What It’s About: Suicidal young cop Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) is partnered with too-old-for-this-shit cop Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover). The pair must learn to work together while attempting to bust a brutal drug ring that owns a stealth helicopter and is willing to employ someone unhinged enough to be played by Gary Busey…can they do it?
Why Watch it Today?: Richard Donner turns 84 today. Donner’s action/adventure films tinged with comedy hit their peak in the 1980s, none more than Lethal Weapon, which standardized buddy cop clichés in such a powerful way that it became a franchise that, like Murtaugh, always seemed to be on the verge of retiring without ever actually retiring.
Other Choices: Donner also directed former Movies of the Day The Goonies, Ladyhawke and Superman.
