April 30th, 2014: Troll (1986)

Troll

Cast and Crew: John Carl Buechler (Director); Charles Band (Producer); Albert Band (Executive Producer); Richard Band (Score); Michael Moriarty, Shelley Hack, Sonny Bono, Brad Hall, Anne Lockhart, June Lockhart, Julia-Louis Dreyfuss

What It’s About: The Potters move into a new apartment building inhabited by Torok the Troll (Phil Fondacaro), who takes the form of the youngest Potter, Anne (Jenny Beck) and uses it to turn the residents of the building into plant pods.  Can Anne’s brother Harry Potter Jr. (Noah Hathaway) figure out what’s going on and find a way to stop Torok’s evil plans?

Why Watch it Today?: Troll climaxes on Walpurgis Night, April 30th, the German and Scandinavian Christianized pagan holiday that marks the beginning of Spring with bonfires and folk songs, carnival like celebrations, mead, pranks, costumes, and customs designed to ward off evil spirits.  Troll is nowhere near as so-bad-its-good as its terrible Italian made sequel, but it does have its charms including a surprisingly good cast and the coincidence of a story involving magic and a family that includes Harry Potter Sr. and Harry Potter Jr.
