July 22nd, 2014: The World’s End (2013)

The World's End

Cast and Crew:  Pierce Brosnan, David Bradley, Michael Smiley, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, Rosamund Pike, Bill Nighy

What It’s About: Gary King (Simon Pegg) is stuck on his high school days, especially the most epic night of his life-a never finished pub crawl. He gathers his former friends, mostly unwillingly because of their past with King after the crawl, and attempts to recreate the infamous night…but while they are drinking they gradually realize that something is wrong with their hometown, and it’s not just the spread of cookie cutter establishments…

Why Watch it Today?:  Both the original pub crawl and the attempt to recreate it occur on June 22nd-the first in 1990 and the second in 2010. The World’s End is the third entry in Simon Pegg and co-writer/director Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy and while it might not quite be up to the standard of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, it’s still an excellent comedy that is worth a watch.

I liked this, but felt it was missing a few scenes. I guess I’ll need to see what’s on the Blu-Ray to see if they discuss the same things I’m thinking of. I think it works best if one is close to that age range the cast is and gets all the music, jokes and references made. It also felt like a Dr. Who episode gone haywire (or more haywire than usual)…
