November 6th, 2014: The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947)

Cast and Crew:
Joseph L. Mankiewicz (Director); R.A. Dick (Novel); Bernard Hermann (Score); George Sanders, Anna Lee

What It’s About: Widow Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney) moves into seaside Gull Cottage with her daughter Anna (Natalie Wood).  The new place is perfect except for their unexpected roommate, the ghost of Captain Daniel Gregg (Rex Harrison).

Why Watch it Today?:  Today marks the anniversary of Gene Tierney’s death of emphysema.  The Ghost and Mrs. Muir was one of Tierney’s most successful and beloved films, a charming (and well cast) entry in the small number of romances built around a love affair with a spirit.

Other Choices:  Tierney is excellent as the enigmatic title character of Laura and appears in the excellent Film Noir Night and the City.
