February 13th, 2011: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Cast and Crew:  Michael Gondry (Director/Co-Writer); Charlie Kaufmann (Writer); Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Jane Adams, David Cross, Kirsten Dunst, Tom Wilkinson

What It’s About: Joel Barrish (Jim Carrey) impulsively decides to skip work and take the train out to Montauk one cold February day.  He meets Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) and they immediately hit it off.  There’s just one problem:  Joel and Clementine already broke up and contracted with Lacuna Inc. to erase each other from their memories….

Why Watch it Today?: Lacuna erases Joel’s memories over the evening of February 13th in the film, and the film is firmly placed in the bitter cold of February.  Before you celebrate (or demonize or ignore) one of the most emotionally loaded and commercially exploited U.S. holidays, why not take in this inventive, bittersweet and unblinking look at relationships, love, and just how hard it is to forget someone?
