Cast and Crew: Claude Chabrol (Writer/Director)
What It’s About: In a small French village, the town’s new teacher Helene (Stephane Audran) and butcher Popaul (Jean Yanne) meet at a wedding and begin an unlikely friendship. Shortly after the wedding a series of brutal murders occur in the village…
Why Watch it Today?: Today is the Feast of Saints Perpetua and Felicity, who, among other things, happen to be the patron saints of butchers. Le Boucher is a classic suspense film of the sort where knowing less going in is really more.
Where to Get It: Netflix (Rental only), or Amazon
Is this the basis for So I Married An Axe Murderer?
Heh! Not so much, though I guess there are similarities in that “someone suspects someone is a murderer” kind of way. I actually watched this during my pre-wedding wedding related horror binge, and it was easily one of the best, if not the best, of the films.
