May 12th, 2012: The Phantom of the Opera (1925)

Cast and Crew:  Gaston Leroux (Novel); Carl Laemmle (Presenter); Norman Kerry

What It’s About: The mysterious, masked “phantom” of the Paris Opera (Lon Chaney) will do anything to see that Christine (Mary Philbin) succeed.  What does his mask hide?

Why Watch it Today?:  Today is European Opera Day, when Opera Houses across Europe open their doors to the public to promote the art.  It  may seem strange to choose a silent film on such a day, but while operas have been filmed, no filmed opera approaches the fame of today’s film.

Where to Get It:  Stream from Amazon, Hulu, Netflix, or Vudu

No trailer, but the entire film is available for free (with ads) on YouTube Movies:

Other Choices:  I suppose you could watch Amadeus: I hear he wrote an opera or too.  Or maybe you’d prefer What’s Opera  Doc?
