March 11th, 2013: The Curse of Frankenstein (1957)

The Curse of Frankenstein

Cast: Terence Fisher (Director); Jimmy Sangster (Screenplay); Michael Carreras (Executive Producer); Anthony Hinds (Producer); Hazel Court

What It’s About: Baron and meglomaniac Victor Frankenstein (Peter Cushing) hopes to not only revive but also create life; but when he succeeds, what kind of creation will result?

Why Watch it Today?:  Mary Shelley’s groundbreaking sci-fi/gothic horror novel Frankenstein was published today in 1818, inspiring countless adaptations on stage, radio, screen and television, as well as countless rip-offs.  Hammer’s Frankenstein series is one of the best adaptations; not in detail, but in spirit.  Victor Frankenstein, not his creation, the real monster here.  He’s so driven by his ambition and his belief that the ends justify the means that he’ll do anything to advance science (and fulfill his own grand ambitions by doing so), including grave robbing, murder, and so much more…

Other Choices:  I Was a Teenage Frankenstein, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Meet Frankenstein, Young Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula vs.Frankenstein, Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed, Death Race 2000
