October 4th, 2014: One Week (1920)

One Week

Cast and Crew:  Edward F. Cline, Buster Keaton (Directors, Writers); Joseph M. Schenck (Producer); Buster Keaton (Editor)

What It’s About: A bride (Sybil Seely) and groom (Buster Keaton) attempt to assemble a pre-fabricated house over the course of a week with disastrous results.

Why Watch it Today?: Silent film legend Buster Keaton was born on this date in 1895.  Keaton was one of the “Big Three” of silent film comedy along with Charlie “sentimental Brit” Chaplin and Harold “Go Getter” Lloyd and his style is arguably more modern than either of his competitors, featuring big stunts, camera trickery and Keaton’s famous “stone face” nonplussed reactions to all the madness around him.  Today’s film is one of his best shorts, featuring one of his most iconic and dangerous stunts:  having an entire side of a house fall down and miss him only because he’s standing exactly where the open window will land.  If the placement wasn’t perfect Keaton’s career would have ended abruptly.

Other Choices:  We’ve previously featured Keaton’s The General, The Playhouse, Sherlock Jr. and Steamboat Bill, Jr.

No trailer but the entire short film:
