Intolerable Cruelty
Cast and Crew: Cedric the Entertainer, Geoffrey Rush, Billy Bob Thorton, Richard Jenkins
What It’s About: Miles Massey (George Clooney) is one of L.A.’s most successful divorce attorneys. Marilyn (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is one of L.A.’s most devious gold-diggers. When the two meet on opposite sides of the negotiating table during Marilyn’s divorce from her cheating husband, Rex Rexroth (Edward Herrmann). Sparks fly between Massey and Marilyn, though various schemes, double crosses, legal complications and outlandish supporting characters threaten to stop them from coming together.
Why Watch it Today?: The peak month for divorces in January, as couples file to begin the New Year fresh (or hold out until the end of the holiday season before electing to dump their “beloved”). The Coen brothers’ Intolerable Cruelty is one of the best comedies there is about the end of marriage, from able filmmakers with a great cast. Unconvinced? Read my full review here.
