Cast and Crew: Jeanette Nolan, Dan O’Herlihy, Roddy McDowall, Alan Napier
What It’s About: When returning from battle, Macbeth (Orson Welles) and Banquo (Edgar Barrier) encounter three witches, whose prophecies will motivate Macbeth to murder his king and seize the throne-but his guilt over the act and fear of his prophesied end will drive him to acts that set in motion his own doom.
Why Watch it Today?: The real life Macbeth’s last battle began today in 1054 (although he would live for three years after the battle). Orson Welles took many liberties with Shakespeare’s tragedy, some good, some bad, but the result is a fascinating if flawed film that is very much Welles own.
