Why Watch it Today?: Today is National Pie Day, so I offer you two ways to celebrate: watch today’s movie, which features one of the boys telling an absolutely disgusting story of a pie eating contest, or eat a slice of pie. I wouldn’t try to do both.

Well, I was going to have some pie, but then I recalled that scene and got queasy just tihnking about it. So today was National NO Pie day for me.Ooog.
This movie–especially for kids who grew up in Maine–was a must-watch. I think there might also be something slightly gendered about it (I can’t get my wife to watch it, but you know her).
This is one of my favorite movies from the period. And one of the top three King adaptations (up there with “The Shining” and “Shawshank Redemption”
Strangely enough, it was the Baroness who first got me to watch this from start to finish. I don’t think I was actually too old in 1989 for this to speak to me, but I think I missed it when it first came out and then I felt “too old” for it for years. I don’t really have an excuse. It’s definitely a coming-of-age film that is centered on the male experience so I can see how it would be gendered.
Hard to argue with your list in terms of the best movies made from King stories…but I’ve actually only ever read two of his books cover to cover (“The Dead Zone” and the first Dark Tower book-along with some individual short stories my brother told me to read back in the day). I would throw in a vote for Creepshow-not sure how it stacks up to the stories it’s based on, but is it ever a great movie.
