Cast and Crew: Tsui Hark (Screenplay, Producer); Ching Wan Lau, Karen Mok, Francoise Yip, Anthony Wong Chau-Sang
What It’s About: Michael/Tsui Chik (Jet Li) is a survivor of a super soldier experiment, which he escaped with his fellow test subjects when the government decided to liquidate them. He hides out as a mild-mannered librarian…but when a string of murders indicates his fellow victims are now brutal criminals, he realizes he is the only one who can possibly stops them, dons a costume modeled on Kato’s, and calls himself “Black Mask.” Can he stop them alone?
Why Watch it Today?: It’s library week, and, if you’re willing to forgive it the idea that any one can become a librarian when on the run from government killers (I don’t think Michael got his MLS in a super soldier program) you’re in for an exciting, if not exceptional, Hong Kong take on the superhero genre-and for quite a lot of ass kicking from a “Librarian”. Happy Library Week!
