March 22nd, 2011: Faust (1926)

What It’s About: Faust (Gosta Ekman) is tempted by, and sells his soul to, Mephisto (Emil Jannings).

Why Watch It Today?:  Johann Wolfgang von Goethe died today in 1832.  Although director F. W. Murnau takes many liberties with Goethe’s famous play, his film is an achievement, one of the great silent films, full of surreal and fantastic images.

Murnau’s masterpiece, and it still looks spectacular today. Who needs CGI?
