June 18th, 2012: Up! (1976)

What It’s About:   Someone murders Adolf Schwartz (Edward Schaaf) by dropping a piranha in his bathtub.  Margo Winchester (Raven De La Croix) investigates the murder undercover, diving into a plot which involves corrupt cops, sleazy diners, a giant brute, chainsaws, Nazis, S+M….

Why Watch it Today?:  Film critic Roger Ebert was born today in 1942.  Although Ebert is most known as a critic, he also collaborated with legendary smut film director Russ Meyer, first on Beyond the Valley of the Dolls,  then on today’s movie and Beneath the Valley of the Ultravixens.  He was even slated to work on the disastrous Sex Pistols vehicle Who Killed Bambi?, the few filmed segments of which were folded into The Great Rock n Roll Swindle.  Although Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is a better, more coherent film than Up!, Up! features the same sense of humor, particularly the exaggerated, verbose dialogue exchanges delivered at a fast clip (“Taste the black sperm of my vengeance” remains a personal favorite).

Where to Get It:  Amazon (provided you can handle Region 2)

No trailer or even a clip because I can’t find anything worth linking to.  This is a hard one to find, so keep your eyes peeled and good luck.
