What It’s About: Dedicated cops Deke DaSilva (Sylvester Stallone) and Matthew Fox (Billy Dee Williams) work for the “decoy” squad, cops who pose as everyday New Yorkers to provoke attacks from muggers, thieves and rapists. Brutal terrorist Heymar “Wulfgar” Reinhardt (Rutger Hauer) is identified in London after a department store bombing. Wulfgar kills the courier that blew his cover and goes on the lam. To regain his former reputation with his organiation, Wulfgar plans a spectacular terrorist attack in New York City. Lt. Munafo (Joe Spinell) picks Da Silva and Fox to join the special anti-terrorist unit, A.T.A.C., that is trying to stop Wulfgar before it’s too late.
Why Watch it Today?: Wuflgar narrowly escapes capture in London on this date in the film.
Hah! I’m actually surprised Stallone hasn’t remade this one. I guess he no longer looks good in a ladies bathrobe and wig (*snicker*). Okay, I actually liked this, as it’s a nice pre-Die Hard style flick with some decent location work. Saw it when it was released and I recall the shoot making the news for that Roosevelt Island tram scene because some people thought it was actually stuck up there for some reason…
The locations and Hauer make the movie I think…though it’s nice to see Stallone in an action role where he’s a cop who can make mistakes rather than being an action god like he is in his later work. I also enjoyed the opening decoy operation because I just didn’t see that coming!
